This gold 8 Escudos was overstruck on KM-84. KM-84 is the Krause designation for the 8 Escudos type and design that was struck prior to this type. Krause mentions in a footnote that this 8 Escudos has been rarely encountered struck over the previous type. This is the only overstruck 8 Escudos that I've ever seen.

There is considerable design remaining from the understrike, which is visible on both sides. Notice the sun and lettering from the original strike.
