All Major Gold Errors are extremely rare. This is a spectacular Major Mint Error on a two hundred year old U.S. Gold Coin. It is an overdate Draped Bust $5 that has been struck THREE TIMES on the obverse. Notice in the magnified view that there are three separate strikes. Each strike shows a row of stars, the portrait, the Liberty Cap and the word Liberty above the portrait.

This piece is one of a few known U.S. $5 Gold Coins that were struck three or more times. There are a few double struck U.S. Gold Coins as well as a few partial collars, broadstrikes, clips and off-centers.

The rim is filed on the obverse and is noted on the ANACS insert. It is not uncommon for early dated U.S. Gold Coins, from 1795-1829, to have been filed on both sides.

This early dated Gold Coin was fully struck and all of the detail is still visible. There is a small amount of cabinet friction on the high points and some luster is still present in the fields. It is a very attractive coin with no marks or blemishes that are distracting to the eye. It is fascinating to view the obverse up close to see the detail and design of all three strikes.

Almost all Gold Errors occur in the Liberty Head series and the Indian Head series, a century later. This is a spectacular Major Mint Error and is the centerpiece of a Gold Coin or Mint Error Collection.
