These crown-sized patterns were struck with the official adopted dies to test the Sudan ten pound denomination for 1978 and 1979. They were struck in silver, aluminum and copper. They are uniface since only one die was tested.
KM #77 is the ten pound Sudan coin struck in silver. It has an extremely low mintage of 1,417. It is crown-size and weighs 35 grams with .925 silver. It was issued to commemorate the Khartoum meeting of O.A.U. The obverse portrays the eagle and the reverse depicts the African map. KM lists the essais of this coin as 25 struck in aluminum, 21 struck in copper and silver as unlisted. KM lists the piedforts as 10 struck in silver, 5 struck in copper and aluminum is unlisted. The uniface specimen die trials are unlisted in KM and are much rarer than the essais and piedforts with an estimate of only 3-5 known.
KM #81 is the ten pound Sudan coin struck in silver. It has an extremely low mintage of 3,000. It is crown-size and weighs 35 grams with .925 silver. It was issued to commemorate the 1,400th anniversary of Islam. The obverse portrays the eagle and the reverse depicts buildings and design. KM lists the essais of this coin as 40 struck in aluminum, 21 struck in copper and silver is unlisted. KM lists the piedforts as 10 struck in silver, 5 struck in copper and aluminum is unlisted. The uniface specimen die trials are unlisted in KM and are much rarer than the essais and piedforts with an estimate of only 3-5 known.
With such an extremely low number of specimen uniface die trials known (estimate 3-5), it is highly unlikely that another set will be assembled containing both types of Sudan ten pounds, struck in three different metals of the obverse and reverse. This is an exciting set for the collector of African coinage or patterns and die trials.
