1869 Dime Judd #698
Double Struck
ANACS PROOF 63 Brown
UNIQUE

This is one of the most spectacular major errors that I've ever handled. All proof errors are extremely rare and U.S. pattern errors are almost unheard of. The fact that this is a Major Proof Pattern Mint Error is unbelievable.

It is an 1869 Dime Judd #698. This was the first year of a series of pattern pieces, known as the Standard Silver Series. These were originally intended to replace the fractional currency in circulation. The denominations were 50¢, 25¢ and 10¢ which were smaller in size and lighter in weight than the regular U.S. coins of equal denomination.

Judd #698 was struck in copper, has a reeded edge and a Rarity Rating of 6.

This major mint error was double struck in the collar. The coin rotated between strikes. The doubling on the portrait is most obvious although upon closer examination both strikes are visible.

There are only a handful of double struck patterns known. This spectacular major rarity would be the centerpiece of any collection.
