A counter-brockage is an extremely rare type of mint error, and rarely discovered on U.S. type coins. This 40% counter-brockage reverse is unique in the Mercury Dime series.

A counter-brockage error involves a capped die and a previously struck coin, or a coin that has a brockage and a blank planchet. When a capped die strikes a previously struck coin, the obverse (or reverse) design from that struck coin will be impressed into the cap. The result will be a design where the cap face will be an incuse brockage. When a new coin is struck, the obverse (or reverse) will have a raised and spread out design from the incuse design of the cap. The same process occurs involving a coin with a brockage and a blank planchet.
