1979 Germany 5 Mark Commemorative of Otto Hahn (1879-1968)
Struck on an Off-Center Brockage
Unique

This is a unique and spectacular Mint Error from the Federal Republic of Germany. All Major Mint Errors from Germany are very scarce. The few that are known are the smaller denonminations. Not only is a 5 Mark Germany's largest silver denomination, this Mint Error is on a limited mintage commemorative issue as well.

This commemorative was struck 60% off-center with an incuse brockage obverse and a uniface reverse. The coin then re-entered the collar and was struck again. The design of the second strike on the obverse is over the off-center brockage. The design of the second strike on the reverse is over the off-center uniface. A very unusual sequence of errors where a coin was overstruck on an off-center brockage.

This is a spectacular error for two reasons. The first is due to the extreme rarity of this type of error. The second reason is because it is on a very limited mintage of a large denomination commemorative issue.
