This is the earliest known U.S. Off-Metal STRUCK IN PROOF for ANY Denomination. The next known date for a PROOF Off-Metal is 1968-S. This piece was discovered in a 1957 Proof set and was immediately removed from the set. The strike is phenomenal, as are all proof coins which are struck twice. It has razor sharp detail, especially on the Memorial Building and steps. It exhibits an exquisite red to purple toning and color which is typical on the copper coins from original early proof sets. The fields are deep and mirrored. It is well-centered with a square edge and a high rim. It has an exceptional overall appearance and is a very exciting Major Mint Error. Unique. |
