This is the only known and certified Proof planchet for the Jefferson Nickel with an experimental rinse. In addition, this is the only known experimental proof planchet with an experimental rinse for any modern U.S. denomination. This was discovered in a hoard of San Francisco Mint Errors. The dated errors were in the 70's so it is presumed that this unique planchet was produced during that time frame as well.

A century ago, the U.S. Mint experimented with finishes in Roman, Matte and Brilliant. Modern finishes are Brilliant, Matte and Specimen. Obviously other finishes were tested, including this proof experimental planchet.

This unique planchet is an experimental rinse and has a notation on the planchet by the U.S. Mint, which is included on the NGC insert. An experimental rinse was applied to the blank to prevent spots and tarnish. In the year 2000, I discovered a hoard of struck Sacagawea Dollars with an experimental rinse. Coin World featured my discovery in their newspaper.

The notation by the U.S. Mint, actually written on the planchet and included on the NGC insert, is documentation and history of the process and production of proof experimental Nickel planchets. This is part of the Mint's history and production of experimental coinage. This proof experimental planchet was unknown to the numismatic community.
