Proof Jefferson Nickel Planchet

Discovery Piece

From The San Francisco Hoard
$2,000
This Proof Jefferson Nickel planchet is one of only a handful known with an experimental finish. In addition, they are the only known experimental proof planchets with an experimental finish for any modern U.S. denomination. These were discovered in a hoard of San Francisco Mint Errors. The dated errors were in the 70's so it is presumed that these were produced during that time frame as well.
A century ago, the U.S. Mint experimented with finishes in Roman, Matte and Brilliant. Modern finishes are Brilliant, Matte and Specimen. Obviously other finishes were tested, including this proof experimental planchet.
Considering that a Presidential Dollar blank with the edge lettering is being offered by a well-known error dealer for $8k and Silver Dollar blanks sell up to $2k each, this experimental Nickel planchet is exciting. It is part of the Mint's history and production of experimental coinage. This experimental planchet was unknown to the numismatic community.
Also in this San Francisco hoard were 3 unique Eisenhower Dollars 40% Silver with an experimental rinse. These unique blanks each have specific notations by the Mint and are included on the NGC inserts:
